Accent Reduction Tips for Speaking Clearly
- Slow down. Practice setting the pace that is within your comfort level. Others will follow.
- Practice makes perfect. Practicing your articulation exercises a few times per day is better than once a day for a long marathon practice session.
- Know common mispronunciation mistakes and monitor them in conversation.
- Have fun. Remember to relax and be at ease. If you are tense mentally, then you will tense up physically. Take time to breathe.
- Pause and think of the next phrase you’re about to say, before you say it.
- Don’t worry about appearing foolish to communicate with your new accent. If you’re not doing something different, then chances are you’re not learning something new.
- Take advantage of more opportunities to converse with someone new.
- Pay attention to the speech patterns of others you admire.
- Don’t just think about meaning, but, the basic rhythm patterns.
- Have an accountability person for monitoring mistakes and doing your homework.
