Accent Reduction Tips for Speaking Clearly

  • Slow down. Practice setting the pace that is within your comfort level.  Others will follow.
  • Practice makes perfect. Practicing your articulation exercises a few times per day is better than once a day for a long marathon practice session.
  • Know common mispronunciation mistakes and monitor them in conversation.
  • Have fun. Remember to relax and be at ease.  If you are tense mentally, then you will tense up physically. Take time to breathe.
  • Pause and think of the next phrase you’re about to say, before you say it.
  • Don’t worry about appearing foolish to communicate with your new accent. If you’re not doing something different, then chances are you’re not learning something new.
  • Take advantage of more opportunities to converse with someone new.
  • Pay attention to the speech patterns of others you admire.
  • Don’t just think about meaning, but, the basic rhythm patterns.
  • Have an accountability person for monitoring mistakes and doing your homework.
